Transport

  • Metro: Paris's metro has 14 lines and 12 of these penetrate into the surrounding suburbs.
  • RER: Reseau Express Regional is a network of large
  • -calibre regional trains that run far into the suburbs of Paris, with fewer stops within the city itself.
  • Transilien: These are suburban train lines connecting Paris' main stations to the suburbs not reached by the RER
  • Tram: Ten lines are currently operational, with extensions and additional lines in the planning and construction stage.
  • Bus: Paris' bus lines interconnecting all points of the capital and its closest suburban cities. There are 58 bus lines operating in Paris that have a terminus within city limits.
  • Cycling: Cycling is a popular mode of transportation in Paris - daily travels made by bike amount to a third of the number of travels made by car.

About City

Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. Paris has been one of Europe's major centers of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts. Paris Region, which has an estimated official 2018 population of 12,246,234, or 18.2 percent of the population of France. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Worldwide Cost of Living Survey in 2018, Paris was the second-most expensive city in the world, behind Singapore.

The city is a major rail, highway, and air-transport hub served by two international airports: Paris-Charles de Gaulle (the second busiest airport in Europe after London Heathrow Airport with 69.5 million passengers in 2017) and Paris-Orly. Paris is especially known for its museums and architectural landmarks: the Louvre was the most visited art museum in the world in 2017, with 8.1 million visitors.

Popular landmarks in the centre of the city include the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris and the Gothic royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle, both on the Île de la Cité; the Eiffel Tower, constructed for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889; the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900; the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, and the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur on the hill of Montmartre. Paris received 23 million visitors in 2017, measured by hotel stays, with the largest numbers of foreign visitors coming from the United States, the UK, Germany, and China. It was ranked as the third most visited travel destination in the world in 2017, after Bangkok and London.

The French government supports healthcare in Paris for all French residents and pays for 75% of healthcare needs in most cases. check out the American Hospital of Paris, which is located on the western periphery of Paris. The hospital is only accessible by bus, as the Metro does not run into the district. Within the hospital are English-speaking doctors that specialize in nearly every discipline, from the inner ear to sports therapy and muscular issues. If you feel comfortable speaking in French with your doctors, then visit the Hospital de la Pitie Salpetriere, which is located in Paris's city-proper. Salpetriere is known around the world for providing exceptional medical care for patients of international origin. 

English speakers can also pick up a copy of the Bloom Book in any bookstore. The Bloom Book is a directory of English-speaking organizations, stores and service providers for the region in and around Paris. Pharmacists in Paris are also very helpful in recommending treatments for more common ailments.
