Biography:

Javier Ramon Azcon is one of the six researchers in Catalonia who have been awarded a Starting Grant by the European Research Council (ERC, for its acronym in English). The senior researcher of the group Biomimetic Systems for Cellular Engineering has received funding for his project "Diabetes Approach by Multi-Organ-on-a-Chip '(DAMOC)" from the prestigious European funding body.

With this support, which will last up to five years, Javier will begin a new line of research to design an innovative tool to test drugs for diabetes, as well as to improve different approaches to test drugs. The "multi-organ on a chip" device will provide new therapies to prevent the loss of beta cell mass (those responsible for producing insulin) in cases of type-1 diabetes, and defects in glucose uptake by skeletal muscle associated with Type 2 Diabetes.

He completed his Ph.D. from CSIC-IQAC (2004-08). After that, he joined as a JSPS Post-Doctoral Fellow in Graduate School of Material Science, University of Hyogo. Then Worked as an Associate Researcher at Advanced Institute of Materials Research (WPI-AIMR) from 2011-13 and then as Assistant Professor from 2013-15. Currently, he is working as Junior Group Leader at Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC).
